DancingDancing is an activity that can place enormous strains through the body. Dance involves repetitive movements that require open chain movement of the lower limb. This challenges balance, control and stability of the body.

Injuries are often caused by high impact, repetitive stress and may be the results of years of overuse, or by one fall with a bad landing.  Common dance injuries include sprains and strains, where your muscles and ligaments are overstretched or twisted. Additionally dancers can also sustain impact injuries – such as bruises caused by falling, collisions or trips and slips. Ill-fitting shoes can cause foot and toes injuries.

The more stable your core (through Pilates) the less likely you are to suffer from pain in the hips and back. Dancing with biomechanical dysfunction or muscle imbalances including flat feet, tight calf muscles or with weak quadriceps can develop a serious problem that can force you to break from routines, performing and even dance altogether if not addressed properly.

  3. Promote healing of the injured tissues and to control the inflammation and pain
  4. Thoroughly rehabilitate the injury restoring full flexibility, strength, balance & proprioception and correcting any muscle imbalances that may have developed
  5. Provide individual sport specific exercise programmes
  6. Use sport-specific functional testing and rehabilitation to ensure that you are ready to return to training and competition
  7. Discuss strategies to reduce recurrence of the injury

If proper management is not undertaken, you may return to dancing too soon despite instability, lack of mobility, proprioceptive disturbance and muscle weakness. This will greatly enhance the risk of prolonged pain and re-injury. This ultimately affects your performance for the length of time you are not properly rehabilitated.

For ongoing structured, supervised exercise excellent for becoming ‘dancing-fit’ you could join our Pilates and Fitness Conditioning classes. These are fun small group classes that incorporate small equipment including the BOSU, gym balls and resistance apparatus to challenge balance, tone and build muscle strength without losing flexibility.  The maximum class number is 6 so you can be sure to get individual attention throughout ensuring you are performing exercises for the full benefit.
