Swimming is among the most popular low-impact fitness activities. Most swimming injuries are related to over-use or repetitive strain type injuries due to its low impact nature. When swimmers become fatigued they fail to adhere to proper stroke techniques. Often swimmers are tremendously flexibility and have joint laxity. Slight injuries and micro-trauma can cause shoulders to become unstable and lead to shoulder pain and tendinitis. Other repetitive injuries include inner knee problems and hip problems from breaststroke kicking, and back injuries from dolphin kick.
Common Swimming Injuries are:
- Rotator Cuff pathology
- Biceps tendinitis
- Shoulder instability
- “Breast Strokers” Knee – tendon and ligament problems
- Inflammation of the hip tendons
- Back pain – including disc prolapses
- Sacroiliac and pelvic joint pain

- Use sport-specific functional testing and rehabilitation to ensure that you are ready to return to training and competition
- Discuss strategies to reduce recurrence of the injury
If proper management is not undertaken, you may return to swimming too soon despite instability, proprioceptive disturbance and muscle weakness. This will greatly enhance the risk of prolonged pain and re-injury. This ultimately affects your performance for the length of time you are not properly rehabilitated.
